Hordes and heroes Fantasy: Romano British v Orcs

Post by Paul K »

Just for a novelty game we added some fantasy elements to a Romano British army (a wizard, a unit of treemen, giants and giant eagles), and pitted it against an Orc army. The Orcs had a plentiful supply of trolls, giants as well as green skins of various sizes. With one wizard each both sides would have the opportunity to evoke elementals. This was engineered to be a light-hearted fun game to perhaps lift a few spirits after the recent loss of one of our long serving club members.

There were no lakes, streams or rivers on the table so that the wizards could only evoke fire or earth elementals. However, in the photos you will be able to spot water elementals – they were used to represent Orc command stands! In my rush to put this game together and get to the club by 7pm I managed to leave the Orc commanders on my table at home! Anyway, game on!

Chris L took control of the Brits and Chris and Tim the Orcs. Opening moves saw the Orc army quickly close on their opponents while the Brits deployed into a strong defensive position making good use of a hill and adjacent area of woodland. The wizards moved forward to use their limited magic skills to try mostly unsuccessfully to evoke fire and earth elementals. After too many failed attempts by both sides the Orc wizard managed to evoke a well-positioned fire elemental which succeeded in causing 2 units of British warriors to flee, disrupted each losing a stand.

Two aggressive Orc hordes charged into contact with the British warriors which heralded a general Orc advance lead by trolls and giants. However, Tony was well prepared for this, and his warriors defended the woodland with valour and the British chariot units attacked the flanks of the trolls. The right flank of the Orcs was still too far back to add any support and the Orc shooters failed to find their mark. Chris L was then able to charge his British cavalry against the Orcs threatening his left wing. This resulted in a massive no holds barred hand-to-hand combat causing major losses on both sides. The wizards both found themselves caught up in the resulting chaos and gave up on any further attempt to use their magic. Instead, they just got stuck-in with sword and staff!

The 2 opposing units of flyers engaged each other and the Orc flyers were soon fleeing with giant eagles in pursuit after a quick aerial defeat. Down below their Orc friends were not fairing much better after a series of rather poor dice rolls saw their units recoil back into each other disrupting many units. Tony, grasped the opportunity to outflank the Orc left wing with a unit of giants and warrior hordes.

The line of Orc shooters gave up on their rather pathetic attempts to inflict any damage on the Brits through shooting and just charged-in. However, their attempts to exact revenge through hand-to-hand combat proved equally useless! The next couple of rounds of combat saw the number of units on the table diminish rather quickly. it became glaringly obvious that this game would be swiftly resolved by the differences in the very high rate of attrition being suffered by both sides.

The solitary unit of treemen slowly stomped across the table, unable at any point of the game, to make contact with any Orc opposition. The Orc army had already had enough! They broke and fled!
Kind regards
Paul
